I was born in Liss, Hampshire and learnt to play the clarinet and piano at school and also went on to achieve Grade 8 in the recorder. At University I continued my musical interests by joining the Choir and teaching myself to play the guitar. In 1991 I saw an advert in the Haslemere Herald asking for new members to join the Band, although I could already read music, I had never tried to play a brass instrument before but decided to go along anyway. Later in 1991 I was promoted to the senior band and then gradually worked my way up through the ranks until being appointed Principal Cornet, where I have been since 1994. I have been an active member of the committee since 1992 and have had spells as secretary and engagements manager and also helped to teach the beginners. |
