My first instrument was the obligatory recorder! I then progressed onto the organ, although I always struggled coordinating two hands and two feet simultaneously. I first started learning to play the baritone horn at age 9 as my mum decided it would be easier if I played the same instrument as my older brother and his arms were too short for the trombone! Music played a large part of my school life, and I was involved in 3 tours to Spain and Italy as well as many concerts and productions. I played in the local music centre bands until the age of 15 when I left to join St Sebastian’s Brass Band in Crowthorne, my home town, for 2 years. I joined Dunston Silver Band (www.dunstonband.com) while at university in Newcastle and besides getting drunk frequently, we did managed to get the band’s first win at a proper contest in Whitehaven in 2002 (whether I helped or hindered I haven’t worked out yet!). I joined Haslemere Town Band in July 2004 and have been here ever since!
