As a youngster, back in Germany I was always very interested in our local Brass Band, but it was difficult in those days to become a member.
It took many years and two changes of countries before I finally had the opportunity to learn a brass instrument and become part of Farnham Brass Band. In fact it was in 1986 as a 44 year old that I had that luck. My youngest son was the catalyst for this as he played cornet at the age of 10 years and I used to take him to rehearsals. One day I was asked if I wanted to join. That was the start!
I started on 2nd Horn, but a few years later moved to Eb Bass when we needed a player to go on a trip to Germany and Switzerland with Farnham.
Again, it took several years, till about 1991 or so, before I changed to Bb Bass, due to another player moving on to trombone. I have stayed with the Bb Bass until late in 2004 when problems with my arm forced me to move back to Eb Bass.
I joined Haslemere Town Band on a trip to Germany to help out in 1998 and really enjoyed the companionship and playing with them. I stayed with them ever since, but also continue with Farnham Brass Band, juggling between the two Band's engagements, not always to everybody's satisfaction.
