Player returns after a long gap

The Band is pleased to welcome back Steve Hubbard on cornet.

Steve started playing when aged five, being taught by his neighbour Ronnie Stevens. In 1960 when aged six Steve joined the Haslemere Town Band as a learner on back row cornet. Over the years he has played various instruments in the Band, but not trombone, eventually settling on Soprano Cornet.

On one memorable occasion, a concert at Lindford Club, several of the Band were called away as they were on retainers for the fire brigade due to the then disrupting strikes, and he started the concert on Soprano and finished on BBb Bass!

Stephen took the training band for a time and taught some of the current members and even, to the surprise of a particular member, taught her father.

After moving to Petersfield Stephen joined Liss Band, originally on Soprano but after a reshuffle, on Principal Cornet for three years.

Steve left Haslemere Town Band about ten years ago and has been saying he would come back for a 'blow' for a few years now. Three months ago we actually managed to lure him back into the band room. The rest, as they say, is history. Stephen is currently playing as the fourth man down on the front bench.
